10 Things To Know Before Moving To Warner Robins, Georgia

by Mischa Thompson

You are moving to Warner Robins Georgia or you are thinking about moving there? Or do you have military orders to Robins Air Force Base but don't know what to expect? Here are 10 Things that you should know about when making the move to Warner Robins!

#1 The GNAT problem.

GNATS are little flies. Those suckers are so annoying, and in the summertime, you will be swarmed by millions maybe not millions, but by thousands at least. It feels like thousands of those littlest suckers. Seemed to only attack me. This is because back in the day the area here in Warner Robins was under water, SWAMP LAND! There are a lot of lakes and ponds in the area which is the perfect breeding ground for these insects and that is one reason why we have issues with GNATS some years more and some years less. There is also the so-called GNAT LINE, the Georgia gnat line goes from Columbus to Macon to Augusta, and if you are south of that gnat line, you are pretty much SCREWED and Warner Robins is of course south of that line.

That is the only really annoying thing you need to know before moving down here. The best thing you can do in the summertime when it's really bad is to walk with your hands up in the air, so the gnats attack your hands and not your face. Does it work? Honestly, I haven't tried it and I don't believe it will make a difference but who knows?! Maybe I should try it? Keep in mind regular mosquito repellent will NOT work against the Gnats.

Now that we are done with the NEGATIVE I will only bring up the positives about moving to Warner Robins and Robins Air Force Base

#2 Military community.

Warner Robbins is the home of Robins Air Force Base and which is a massive military installation here in Houston County Georgia. Currently, the base employs roughly 33,000 people, Civilians as well as DOD personnel. Robins Air Force Base is therefore the largest employer in Houston County. The base was built in 1942 and was named after Brigadier General Augustine Warner Robbins, the father of logistics. The base is located just east of Warner Robins, 18 miles southeast of Macon, Georgia, and about a hundred miles south southeast of Atlanta, Georgia.

Don't try to sound it out, but you need to know what those letters stand for! You will see those letters all over town, on business signs in commercials, and even sculptured into the landscaping around town in a fashion Edward Scissor Hand would actually be super proud of! E D I M G I A F A D stands for Every Day in Middle Georgia is Armed Forces Appreciation DayAnd the people here in the Warner Robins Area live by that, military personnel and their families are highly appreciated.

When it comes to purchasing a home, you want to be in an area that is affordable for you so you can get what you want and desire. Warner Robins has been consecutively ranked one of the most affordable places to purchase a home in Georgia and all of the United States. #5 You can stop worrying about BLIZZARDS.

Well, actually, whit all that weather craziness around the world going on, I am not so sure about that anymore. The cold season here in Middle Georgia lasts from the end of November till the end of February, and the daily average high here in Warner Robins on those cold season days is 64 degrees. Which is really cold considering being here in Georgia. That is when you see Georgias start wearing sweaters and they complain about it being freezing cold. But if you're coming from a different state, that might be not so cold at all! The hot season lasts about four months here in Middle Georgia from May 20th to September 16, and the average daily high temperature on those days is 84 degrees. But don't forget the humidity down here is crazy and it will kick your behind.

Snow is rare in Warner Robins but when it does Snow everything shuts down!

#6 Warner Robins is close to metropolitan areas and also close to the ocean with super nice beaches.

Warner Robins is pretty close to metropolitan areas like Macon, Georgia, and even Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta is about a hundred miles northwest of Warner, Robin, and it takes you about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to drive up there. Perfect for a day trip or a weekend trip to the Coca-Cola Museum and the Georgia Aquarium, both of which are amazing. Atlanta also has the Olympic Park, and the College Football Hall Of Fame, and everything is conveniently located downtown. Just park your car and walk through downtown Atlanta and don't forget to do the Ferris Wheel.

On the other hand, you are super close to the East Coast and the beaches in Savannah and Hilton Head! Savannah is a super amazing city to check out, the city has a lot of historical background, from the original city plan and layout of London over haunted places to the origin of the Girl Scouts. Savannah is a perfect place to go and spent the weekend with your family, visit the beach and do some historical treasure haunting throughout the city.

#9 Simply churches.

If you have never been to a state that is in the Bible Belt, then you don't know what I'm talking about. If you've never been to that part of the country, you don't know what I'm talking about. You are never more than a few blocks away from a church, and if you are from Georgia, you are used to that. As mentioned Georgia is located in the Bible Belt and therefore has a higher church attendance than other states in the United States, and you can clearly see that with higher attendance, more churches are needed if you are not from this area.

You might never see as many churches as there are in Warner Robins! I'm originally from Germany and every town in Germany has two churches, which are a Protestant church and a Catholic church, but that's it. So there are two churches for the whole town, but I have never seen as many churches as here in Warner Robins, there must be hundreds of churches.
